Duo:
I knew you wanted to tell me

Heero pauses by the open door to Duo's room. A strange expression crosses his face, emotion showing faintly in his normally cold, dark eyes.
Duo waits, sitting on the end of his bed, his endless stream of chatter silenced by the look on Heero's face. "N-nani?" he asks nervously.

in your voice there was something wrong

"Nothing," Heero mutters thickly.
Duo quirks his eyebrows at him. "Nothing?" His mischievous look is tempered with concern.

but if you would turn your face away from me

Heero shrugs, his eyes growing cold and distant again.
Duo jumps up, reaching out to him, but Heero turns and walks away.

you cannot tell me, you're so strong . . .

In his room, Heero stands tensely, fists clenched, his back to the door. Tears bead in the corners of the civilian casulties in the battle earlier. The pain tears at his heart.
Duo slips into the room, unnoticed, as Heero scrubs at the tears with the back of his hand. "Heero?" he murmurs.
Heero spins around, ready to lash out, but the braided pilot steps forward, pulling him into his arms. He tenses, fists still curled and ready to attack. Duo's hands move soothingly across his back, smoothing the tense muscles. With a stifled sob, Heero buries his face in Duo's shoulder.

Just let me ask of you one small thing
as we have shared so many tears

The two are in bed, Duo resting his head on Heero's shoulder. His long brown hair is loose, falling like a curtain over both of them. He lies awake, listening to the gentle rhythm of Heero's breathing.
    "Heero . . ." he whispers, "promise me. . . ."
His lover pulls him closer, holding him with fierce gentleness.

with fervor our dreams we planned a whole life long

"And when the war's over, we can find ourselves a nice little place --"
    "Duo."
He stops, catching hold of his braid nervously. "N-nani, Heero?"
Heero shakes his head, his eyes hard and cold. "You know we probably won't live that long."
Duo's laugh is harsh. "I know, baka. But just in case. . . ."
He looks so wistful that Heero can't help but relent. He sighs. "Contingency plans are good, I guess."
Duo grins at him.

now are scattered on the wind . . .

Duo, piloting Deathscythe, screams in rage and disbelief as he watches Wing self-destruct. Pieces of Heero's gundam drift by like so much space debris as Deathscythe hangs motionless. Enemy mobile suits close in, and Duo releases Deathscythe's thermal blade in sudden, eerie silence.

In the terms of endearment

"Ai shiteiru . . . Heero. . . ."
"Omae wa ore no mono da."

in the terms of the life that you love

The gundams streak across the sky, cutting their way through the enemy lines. Duo's maniacal laughter reverberates through the coms as he wreaks death and destruction. Heero is grimly silent, focused intensely on the job at hand.

in the terms of the years that pass you by
in terms of all the reasons why.

Heero and Duo lie side by side beneath an oak tree.
"Why do you love me?" Duo asks playfully.
Heero glances at him, puzzled.
"I have hundreds of reasons why I love you," Duo confesses coyly. "But you probably wouldn't want to hear them all. So tell me. One reason why you love me." He plays with the end of his braid, violet eyes wide and innocent.
Heero stares at him thoughtfully, his dark blue eyes full of conflicting emotion. After a long moment, he whispers, "because you love me." Then he rolls over and kisses Duo thoroughly, not giving him a chance to ask anything else.

Relena:
Through the years I've grown to love you

She watches Heero from a distance, always from a distance it seems. Watches Gundam Wing cut its way through enemy lines. Watches Heero and Duo together in the school yard, on the street, in her dreams.

though your commitment to most would offend

He's a fighter, focused solely on his missions. But she loves him anyway. Loves his intensity, his perfection, his dedication. Loves him because she can't have him.

but I've stuck by you, holding on with my foolish pride
waiting for you to give in . . .

She takes the ribbon from her hair and offers it to him, waiting hopefully for him to accept it. He stares at it blankly, as if it belongs in a different world from him.

You never really tried, or so it seems

He turns and walks away. The wind gusts suddenly, ruffling his short hair and tugging the ribbon from her limp fingers.

I've had more than myself to blame

Tears streak down her cheeks as she turns and runs back to her car. In her mind, she curses him for being heartless, curses herself for loving him, curses the war that separates them in so many ways.

I've had enough of trying everything

Back in her room, she stares at the framed photo of Heero, resolution firming in her eyes.

and this time it is the end . . .

Broken glass surrounds and covers the photo now lying on the carpeted floor. She grinds the heel of her boot down over a shard that lies on Heero's face.

In the terms of endearment

"I love you, Heero."
    But there's never any response.

in the terms of the live that you love

Relena stands in a ballroom, surrounded by officials, OZ generals, and dignitaries. People are laughing and talking, drinking and dancing. Her smile is a little empty, though, and her attention seems to wander ever so slightly. Her eyes keep drifting to the window.

in the terms of the years that pass you by
in terms of all the reasons why . . .

In her mind's eye, Heero appears at the window, looking as intense and determined as ever. Then suddenly, Duo appears beside him and pulls him away. Heero is so far out of her reach. Why can't she just let go? She shakes her head, turning a vacant smile to those clustered around her.

Funny how it seems that all I've tried to do
seemed to make no difference to you . . .

Heero and Duo, side by side as always. And she can only watch.
